Brittle Nails
Welcome to the brittle nails section of the Dry Pharmacist website. Although the majority of the website is devoted to a condition known as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) we also wanted to help individuals with dry and brittle nails (a.k.a onychorrhexis - pronounced 'on-ee-cor-rex-sys'). Generally speaking, both conditions are similar in that, in the majority of cases, they are not serious medical problems . Having said this, they both are troublesome from a psychological, emotional and personal perspective. In many cases these conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life. Both conditions are also what I like to call 'orphan' conditions. They are not considered medically important, yet they are very significant to the individuals that have these conditions. And so, this explains my interest in these conditions - helping by providing easy-to-use cost- effective therapeutic solutions.
Very few treatments exist for individuals that have dry brittle nails. Biotin and nutrition appear to play a role but the evidence remains somewhat inconclusive. Some individuals have had some improvement using biotin supplementation and others have had disappointing results. For more information on these options go to our The Facts on Biotin and The Facts on Nutrition pages.
