Hyperhidrosis and HomeopathyThe use of homeopathy in the treatment of hyperhidrosis is often a subject of discussion. The Dry Pharmacist has always been opposed to recommend homeopathy based on the lack of support from clinical studies. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has published an excellent backgrounder on homeopathy , a must read if you are contemplating the use of homeopathy for any condition. It should be noted that the NCCAM is part of the US National Institutes of Health and is an extremely credible and unbiased organization. Following is an excerpt from this backgrounder that, in our opinion, speak volumes on the status of homeopathy.
More recently, an extensive review (57 systematic reviews / 147 individuals studies), by the Australian Government's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) concludes that 'there are no health conditions for which there is reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective'**
From a healthcare professional's perspective it is difficult to recommend a treatment for excessive sweating that does not have support in the form of well controlled clinical studies. |
The other challenge that homeopathy presents is a more fundamental issue. The basis of its existence is highly vulnerable according to well established principles in the fields of chemistry and physics. The NCCAM states:
Finally, homeopathic treatments are highly individualized and lack standard prescribing practices. For example, Murphy's homeopathic repertory* lists 49 remedies under the 'perspiration' query. Some of these remedies include Sepia, Sulphur, Bryonia Kali-C, Nat mur, and Silicea. We could not find any support for the remedies mentioned in Murphy's repertory for the treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.
