Hyperhidrosis and its Burden Like many medical conditions, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is associated with some degree of burden. For most medical conditions, this burden is often experienced as symptoms (e.g. pain, fever, dizziness, nausea etc.) or some form of impairment, typically mental or physical. To a certain degree, focal hyperhidrosis is unusual in that it is not associated with a profile of symptoms - it really is just a thermoregulatory process that is a somewhat out of control. As discussed elsewhere, sweating is our way of cooling off and regulating internal temperature. Without this process, we would easily overheat and put many of our vital organs and bodily processes in danger's way.
The survey* of 150,000 US households showed that one-third of patients with axillary hyperhidrosis reported their sweating as being barely tolerable or intolerable and as frequently interfering with daily activities.

In addition, 35% of patients reported a decrease in leisure activity time due to excessive sweating. The chart below provides the many aspects of life that are compromised in individuals having an excessive sweating condition.
Many individuals with excessive sweating go to considerable lengths to hide their condition. Social interactions (see chart) are significantly impaired, since patients experience feelings of humiliation and embarrassment. For many with focal hyperhidrosis, simple aspects of socialization, such as shaking hands or hugging, become very awkward. ** Adapted from Haider A, Solish N. CMAJ • JAN. 4, 2005; 172 (1) |
