Inguinal, Groin, or Hexsel's Hyperhidrosis
However you wish to refer to it (inguinal, Hexsel's or groin hyperhidrosis), excessive sweating in the region of the genitals and/or buttocks is just as problematic as hyperhidrosis in other regions. If anything it may be more embarrassing given that watery stains may be become noticeable in the region 'below the belt'. Arguably, inguinal sweating can also be somewhat more discomforting than in the other typical regions. To make matters worse, it usually appears in adolescence - no later than the age of 25, and continues into adulthood.
For women, inguinal hyperhidrosis can even predispose individuals to vaginal infections. Moisture, warmth, and a dark environment are ideal conditions that increase the likelihood of infection. The condition can also be overlooked by medical professionals. In one study*, excessive sweating in the groin region was misdiagnosed as urinary incontinence.

Family TiesTreatments The dry pharmacist offers several treatment options for inguinal hyperhidrosis. Given that this is a particularly sensitive skin region, we recommend low concentration DryDerm products (for example, 10 or 15%), at least as initial treatment. This minimizes the likelihood of skin irritation. If the response is inadequate and the trial is tolerated, a higher strength formulation can then be used. DryDerm Gel or Solution (10, 15, or 20%) are good options (DryDerm Solution can be useful if a hairy area such the pubic region is involved). The ingredients in DryDerm are recommended as a first-line treatment by the Canadian Hyperhidrosis Advisory Committee. |
