The Straight Facts on Brittle Nails and BiotinGiven that some individuals have had some improvement in their brittle nail condition, biotin treatment deserves a closer look. Only a few studies have been published and these indicate mixed conclusions - improvement can be expected in some cases but others will respond very little or not at all. Following are the results of two of best known and largest studies. A Swiss study has demonstrated that biotin supplementation will increase nail plate thickness 25%. Sounds good, the problem is not all individuals will respond to treatment. In this study 4 of 10 individuals did not respond to biotin treatment*.
In another study**, 71 patients were put on a biotin supplement for anywhere between 3 to 8 months. Of the 45 that were evaluated, 41 showed improvement. Four of ten individuals had questionnable improvement of their condition. It is not clear what happened to the 26 non-evaluated patients - presumably they dropped out of the study and this is suggestive of treatment failure. Perhaps the role of biotin for treating dry brittle nails can best be summed up by an impartial and independent organization such as the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)
