Excessive Sweating - You Are Not AloneProfuse or excessive sweating is a relatively common problem affecting men and women equally. Almost 3% of the population is affected, largely in those aged between 25 and 64 years. That may not sound like a lot of people but 3% represents about 400 individuals in a community of 25,000*. Having said this, the onset of palmar and axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis can start at the age of 13 and 19 years respectively. In fact, most patients with palmar hyperhidrosis indicate that the problem started in childhood. More recently ¤ the prevalence of hyperhidrosis is estimated at 4.8%.

You may have inherited this condition as 30-50% of people with hyperhidrosis have a positive family history**. This is supported by a UCLA study showing that the 'sweaty palms' syndrome may actually be inherited. In fact, another study indicated that 65% of individuals with hyperhidrosis reported a positive family history.^ A few years ago, a group of research scientists actually identified a gene responsible for the expression of palmar hyperhidrosis.^^ |
* Individuals aged 25 to 64 years represents about 56% of the population (Statistics Canada, cat. no. 96F0030XIE2001002: www.statcan.ca) ** Haider, A; Solish N.
